Why Tree Pruning Is Necessary

Tree pruning is a necessary and important aspect of maintaining healthy trees. It reduces risks from damage or fall, improves light through the canopy, encourages fruit production and enhances overall beauty. Pruning is best done on a regular schedule and before problems arise. It is not only good for your yard, but it is also good for the environment because it keeps waste material out of landfills.

Typically, you can prune most ornamental and small fruit trees with hand tools. However, larger trees require the use of specialty equipment and should be left to qualified arborists and tree care professionals.

Dead or Diseased Limbs

The most important reason to prune is to remove dead and dying limbs from your trees. Not only does this protect you and your family from injury and property damage, but it also helps control the spread of disease in your tree. If a dead branch falls on your home or car, it can cause significant and expensive damage.

Broken Tree Branch Damage

If your trees are regularly subjected to storms and winds, it’s a good idea to inspect them for signs of damage or breakage. Branches that have been broken by wind or falling off during weather can damage your house, other trees and shrubs. If you notice a lot of broken limbs after heavy rains or storms, it’s likely that your tree needs to be pruned.

Overcrowded and Weakened Crowns

If a tree’s crown is too dense, it can prevent the flow of sunlight to the ground beneath it. In addition, crowded branches tend to rub together and create wounds that are havens for insects and disease. Removing limbs that are overcrowded, weak and/or diseased can help the remaining limbs thrive, and it can increase the number of flowers or fruit produced.

Structural Pruning

There are a few different structural pruning goals: to reduce height, open vistas, repair storm damage, improve air circulation and provide clearance for structures and traffic. This type of pruning requires the removal of crossing or rubbing limbs, suckers from rootstock, water sprouts on limbs, thorns below eye level and other objectionable growth. When pruning to reduce height, it is important to remove no more than one fifth of the canopy in a single year. Removing too much at one time causes the remaining limbs to produce lots of vigorous upright growth known as water shoots.

It is also important to maintain a strong, sturdy structure by removing co-dominant leaders and multi-trunks that grow into a ladder effect at maturity. This can prevent the production of excess lateral branches that are susceptible to wind damage. Thinning can also be used to reduce wind resistance and the degree of tree-topping. When thinning, it is best to cut back to the nearest lateral branch. Ideally, no more than one-fourth of the live crown should be removed at any given time.
